Oceanic Awareness Society PRESS RELEASE Monday, November 14, 2005 January 2006 marks the date for our first excursion into the sea with some fortunate interested children. The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California has agreed to be associated with OAS on this memorable day. And we have secured the charter of the Conqueror a research vessel, also located in Long Beach. The Conqueror is Coast Guard certified and manned with a Captain and a full crew, including an oceanographer. In addition, the Conqueror will be boarded by two staff members of the Aquarium of the Pacific. Edward Cassano (Vice President of Programs & Exhibits) and Amy Coppenger (Director of Education) will join us and offer expert and informed educational information to the children. This experience will be presented in an informal and fun atmosphere. The day will begin with a tour through the Aquarium, concentrating on the same marine life expected to be observed during the afternoon trip. We will then embark on the Conqueror which is berthed mere feet from the Aquarium. The Long Beach Harbor is large, consequently a substantial time will be used up simply departing from berth and heading for sea. However, we anticipate at least three hours of meandering around searching for sea life (in particular the migrating whales) within a few miles of the harbor. The Aquarium maintains a sea basket in the Long Beach Harbor. Stops at the site yield interesting specimens every time. We will plan to stop here on the way back...subject to the time and the intensity of the observations at sea. The children will be selected from Cesar Chavez Elementary School located in Bell Garden, California. Cesar Chavez Elementary School has a working relationship with the Aquarium. It is through this existing relationship that the children will be notified of this opportunity. January has been selected due to the higher decree of success at observing the migrating whales, from the Pacific Northwest south towards Baja California. Just in case, games are planned with rewards. In addition, a wealth of food and beverages will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please send inquires to Ralph@oceanicawareness.com or call Ralph at (818) 404-1200. We are seeking individuals to assist keeping the children comfortable. Please stay tuned for more information, including the specific date in January. (This will be a weekday event occurring during normal school day hours).
